04. Great Spotted Woodpecker

THE LITTLE WHITE HORSE

Great Spotted Woodpecker

The Great Spotted Woodpecker is a very plain coloured woodpecker. It is also called the white horse because its pecking is reminiscent of a horse’s trot.
ABOUT THESE BIRDS

Some curiosities about these birds

This bird is hardly known because until a few years ago it was very scarce in our region, where, fortunately, it is now becoming very common. Its scientific name is Dendrocopos major, and the males have a red nape, unlike the females, which are more discreet. In general, the plumage of the females is always much simpler because they have to incubate and camouflage themselves. If you look closely you will see that this specimen painted on the façade is a male. It is also on a laricio pine (Pinus nigra), with its whitish bark in the shape of puzzle pieces. As a curiosity about this painting, the execution of the tree took approximately 20 hours, much longer than the bird.

HOW IT WAS MADE

Discover how this painting was made

The painting of the hawfinch was a challenge because it is a very simple bird. Its colours are not very bright and an added difficulty is painting in white on a white background. This work has several details that make it very special. The shadows of the plumage, the subtlety of the blacks and the shadows to achieve the volume of the bird. When it was done, it took only 6 hours, and was even done during the night. But the perch is one of the most time-consuming of all the works I have done. It is a laricio pine with the whole design done line by line. A job that took a total of about 20 hours.

It was done with acrylic paints, brushes and acrylic markers. It is protected with varnish to prevent deterioration in terms of its exposure to the exterior and against vandalism. It is a unique work, it has never been done before and never in these dimensions.
