About these mammals

Some curiosities about these mammals

The red fox or Vulpes vulpes is a carnivorous mammal belonging to the canine family. It is a highly adaptable animal and can be found in a variety of habitats, from Arctic regions to temperate and tropical zones. It is a solitary and nocturnal animal, with intelligence and cunning that allows it to hunt larger prey. The red fox is also known for its reddish fur and long, furry tail, which it uses to help balance and as a tool for hunting. The red fox population is stable in most regions where they live, but they can be seen as a pest in some places due to their tendency to attack birds and other domestic animals.

The breeding season for foxes occurs mainly in February and March, and gestation lasts approximately 51 days. During this time, males compete for access to females and can form small groups. Females usually build a shelter or den to house their offspring, often in wooded or mountainous areas.

They typically communicate using a variety of vocalizations, including howls, screeches, and growls. They also communicate using body language and scent signals. To hunt, foxes use their ability to remain silent and their cunning to approach their prey. Because they are excellent swimmers, they can dive into the water to catch their prey. Foxes are omnivores and feed on a wide variety of food, including small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, human-sourced food, and fruits as shown in this illustration.

This mammal is an animal with surprising skills and quirks. For example, it can change the color of its fur according to the season, thus adapting to its environment. It is also known for its ability to imitate human and animal sounds, giving it an advantage in its search for food. They are also very cunning and clever animals, with a highly developed sense of smell that helps them hunt. Despite being solitary animals, red foxes are social and can form family groups. They are also excellent swimmers and have a wide range of vocalizations, including howls, screeches, and growls. They can live up to 14 years in the wild. However, it is important to note that red foxes have been introduced in some places outside their natural habitat and can have a negative impact on local biodiversity.

The fox faces several threats to its survival and well-being. The loss of habitat due to urban expansion and deforestation is one of the main threats to this species. In addition, hunting and killing of foxes by farmers and herders as a measure to protect their herds is also a significant threat. Intentional and accidental poisoning is also a reality that continues to kill these mammals. The reduction of habitat quality and fragmentation can also have a negative impact on the fox population. It is important to take measures to protect habitat and biodiversity and to promote coexistence between humans and foxes, which has not yet been fully achieved.

How it was done

Discover how this Painting was made

The fox was painted in 3 and a half weeks. The position it has, as well as the difficulty in getting the right tone, as well as the volume of the tail and the fur on the body, posed a challenge. It has hundreds of hairs, made one by one with different paints that provide glitter according to the incidence of light on them. The fox measures about two meters and this pose, not very frequent, was achieved by studying videos and photographs of these animals in action while searching for food
